William Boatwright - War of 1812 Pension Records



     Milledgeville, 3rd March 1814.

William Boatright, a private in my Company, under command of Lieut. Col. Saml Groves, has 
served six months and fourteen days in the service of the United States faithfully and he 
is hereby honourably Discharged from said service.

State of Georgia : : Habersham County : SS. On this 9th day of April 1850 Personally appeared this day before me William Boatright a resident of the State of South Carolina and Pickins District, aged Seventy Six (76) years, who being first duly Sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed December 23, 1817, that he was a private in the company of Capt Charles Carter, under Major Benjamin Cleveland, and Lieut. Col Samuel Grover in Genl Floyd's campaign and from forced march in the Creek Nation, between the dates August 24th 1813 and March 3rd 1814, he was so injured in his hips and legs as to be unable to perform military duty, he also further declares that he was from Elbert County, State of Georgia, and was in the Service of his Country and in line of his duty when he received this injury, that no surgeon of the Army resides within thirty miles of him, that he relinquishes every claim to a pension whatever or an annuity, except the present, and he declares that his name is not on the pension role of any agency in any State, and that the paymaster who last paid him was by the name of Hosey, & he served six months and upward. I hereby certify that declarent is unable from bodily affliction to appear in open court to make his declaration. Thomas B. Wheeler, J.I.C.
State of Georgia : : Habersham County : I, Benjamin Cleveland, Major under the command of Lieutenant Col Samuel Groves, in Genl Floyd's campaign, do certify that William Boatright of Elbert County, State of Georgia, served six months and upward in the company of Capt Charles Carter in the Army of the United States in the War of 1812, against Great Britain, commencing on the 24th day of August 1813, and ending on the 3rd day of March 1814, and from forced march between those dates in the Creek Nation received an injury in his hips and legs which totally disabled him from performing military duty, and continues to constitute him an entire invalid, being unable to walk. I also further certify that he is unable from said affliction to attend in open court to make his declaration and was honorably discharged at the end of his service. Sworn to and subscribed this 9th day of April 1850 before Thomas B. Wheeler, J.I.C. Benjamin Cleveland, Major I hereby certify that the above named deposing officer may be relied on for truth and honesty. Thomas B. Wheeler, J.I.C.
State of Georgia : : Habersham County : April 9th 1850. It is hereby certified that William Boatright a private in the company of Capt Charles Carter in Genl Floyd's campaign in the Army of the United States is rendered incapable of performing the duty of a soldier by reason of an injury inflicted while he was actually in the service aforesaid and in the line of his duty, viz by satisfactory evidence and accurate examination, it appears that between the dates of the 24th of August 1813 and the 3rd of March 1814, from forced march in the Creek Nation, he received an overstrain in his hips and legs and he is thereby not only incapacitated for military duty, but in the opinion of the undersigned, is totally disabled from obtaining his substance from manual labor. I hereby certify that the above named surgeons are responsible in their profession. Thomas B. Wheeler, J.I.C.
State of Georgia : : Habersham County : I James E. Griggs, Clerk of the Inferior Court in and for said county, do hereby certify that Thomas B. Wheeler is a Justice of the Inferior Court in and for said county as above, duly commissioned and qualified, that his commission on the 6th day of January 1849 and that it will expire on the first Monday in January 1853, and that his signature above written in establishing the foregoing declaration of applicant and the certificates of the officer and surgeons, are genuine. In testimony whereof I have set my hand and seal of said court this 9th day of April 1850. James E. Griggs, Clerk, I.C.
Clarksville, Georgia April 10th 1850. Sir: In consequence of William Boatright's extreme inability to travel the distance to the Court in his own county, he has made his declaration on the Georgia side, out of his own County and State, but I hope if it is presumable by the department that he is justly entitled to a stipend, that it will be allowed him payable at the Charleston, South Carolina agency the same as if his declaration had been made in the County in which he resides. Treasury Department Third auditors Office May 13, 1850 It appears from the Rolls of Captain Charles Carter's Company Georgia Militia that Wm Boatright, a private, entered the service August 25, 1813 and is mustered present with out remark to March 2, 1814, the expiration of his term of service.
